CommUnity Toastmasters
Community Toastmasters formed in January 2005. We're a fun club, we have fun themes and great camaraderie.
Many clubs vote on best speaker each week and make it a competition. We voted not to vote, and enjoy the fact that each member can improve at their own pace and not feel like they are being compared to other speakers. Giving your first speech? At CommUnity Toastmasters, you won't feel like you have to beat that guy who has been speaking for 20 years. Everyone's a winner!
Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice conducting meetings, giving impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches, and offering constructive evaluation. Each new Toastmaster works through a manual of 10 speeches, working on the basic speaking skills, and each speech is 5-7 minutes. Generally you will write a speech roughly every 4-6 weeks. Once you've completed your first manual, you may choose two advanced manuals, further sharpening your skills.
Our club normally has between 15-20 members, with usually 12-14 showing up any given week. You will have an opportunity to select different meeting roles each week, eventually becoming comfortable in all roles and situations. Isn't that one of the goals? It works!
We collect all dues for you and pay Toastmasters International:
The one time new member fee is $20. This is paid to Toastmasters International. This allows you to receive your monthly TI magazine, packet of information, and your basic speech manual with your first 10 speech projects.
We collect $27 for Toastmasters International every 6 months, in late September and late March. This is prorated to $4.50 every month. So , if you joined in June you’d pay $18 instead of $27, and then again $27 in late September.
You pay $5/month club dues, also prorated to match the Toastmasters International dues period. Same rules apply. (of this amount, $2 goes to the club account for expenses and supplies, and $3 goes to Unity Center as a donation for the great meeting space they provide and their supplies that we use)
We meet every Friday 7 pm-8 pm
